Things To Do in Bensalem PA
Bensalem Township is one of the oldest townships in the entire United States. It is located in Bucks County, PA, bordering the northeastern section of Philadelphia. The name likely originally came from the term for peace, Salem. It was initially named that, but Ben’s first syllable was added later.
The township was founded in 1692, almost as old as Pennsylvania’s founding in 1682. Initially, it had appeared on the Holme Map of 1682 either way, but boundaries weren’t even fixed back then. The name was finally settled upon in 1701. Dutch people, along with a few Swedes, initially settled in the area, but a large influx of English came later, followed by another number of Dutch settlers.
The area is home to Parx Casino and Racing, one of Pennsylvania’s few thoroughbred horse racing track and casinos. It was notable as the original home of champion horses who had raced the Kentucky Derby. The Penn Community Bank Amphitheater features multiple concerts year-round for people from all over the area to enjoy. Andalusia and Belmont are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
