Things To Do in King of Prussia PA
A census-designated place in Upper Merion Township, PA, King of Prussia, is located in Montgomery County. The town took its specific name from a local tavern in the 18th century named the King of Prussia Inn, named for King Frederick the Great of Prussia.
Originally a cottage in 1719, the eponymous King of Prussia Inn was constructed by Welsh Quakers William and Janet Rees, the founders of Reesville. Today’s inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and many famous people have stayed in the inn over the decades, including General George Washington. Suburban development took place starting in the 1960s. The area was intentionally developed as an edge city to spur vigorous economic growth.
Considered an edge city of Philadelphia, there is a considerable amount of retail and office space in the city, mainly situated at the convergence of four highways. It is about 35 miles south of Allentown and 15 miles northwest of Philadelphia, making it very accessible to other cities in the region, rife with possibilities for casual and serious visitors alike. The best place to go is the King of Prussia Mall, the third largest shopping complex in the United States by raw shopping area square footage and sheer number of employers in the area, consisting of over 450 stores. Twenty-two million visitors annually come to it.
